Diabetes runs in families. If mother is diabetic the children have chance to develop diabetes. If father also is diabetic the chances are more. Heredity and family has a major role in Diabetes. This mandates general awareness of Diabetes in the population. It is there in epidemic proportion. Diabetes education at school level is an important recommendation of WHO. Check your blood sugar early enough, as adult type diabetes is seen even in school children. Do it at the age of 20 if not earlier and every year. In some cases Diabetes may be following an infection. It may due to medicines used for some illnesses. Indians everywhere are prone to Diabetes.

During the last two decades the changes in lifestyle are so fast and varied that a cluster of diseases emerged as life style diseases such as Diabetes, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, heart diseases and more. Diabetes is the most prominent one. Lifestyle in simple terms is the way in which a person lives. People move away from nature and the natural way of life. They eat more than what they need. All prepared foods and take aways are calorie rich. Bakery products, soft drinks, fried foods, dried fruits, all are consumed indiscriminately. The question asked is whether we eat to live or live to eat. Good percentages of the people are in various stages of obesity. To cap it, childhood obesity has become very common. The Insulin producing cells are always switched on and they slowly get exhausted giving way to Diabetes. Life is more sedentary. We don’t exercise at all. No ways to burn off calories.
