Type I Diabetes




















   

         Type I Diabetes is generally found in children and young adults. Insulin is the only treatment available to them. Throughout life they have to be on insulin. Insulin producing cells are absent by birth or are destroyed by antibodies or by viral infection.

          Usually symptoms appear following a fever. Excessive thirst and appetite is the commonest symptom.The child may go into coma if not attended to. Repeated infection is very common in such children. As insulin is the only treatment there can be high blood sugar or low blood sugar and the related problems frequently. Complications of diabetes are more with Type I diabetes. It is a frustrating condition in youth as he has to take injection regularly for life. Small children need a lot of motivation. Psychological and social support is essential in type I diabetes.

         As treatment avoid sugars and fatty foods. Take regular and frequent meals within limits.Take insulin regularly. Monitor blood sugar frequently
